Historically big and tall men have had few selections in the retail clothing avenues and malls. In fact, it wasn't until post World War II that garment manufacturers elected to do a sizing study to adjust new pattern sizing for the masses.
At the turn of the twenty-first century, as
garment-makers reassessed women’s and girls’ sizes and shapes, adjusting their
standards for the new millennium, they still neglected men - and, especially big and tall men. In the last several years, however, the
industry has begun catching-up with consumers; and researchers have found that men
are taller, stouter, and generally more muscular than they were sixty years ago
so manufacturers decided its time clothes meet the growing market demand. Among men, “average” used to mean 5’10” and
about 180 pounds. Now, the “average” man
measures a little over 6 feet tall, and he tips the scales at just over 200
pounds. “Medium” sizes fit men at the
lowest end of the measurement scale, and XXL no longer works for the nation’s
biggest men. Still, not all stores have
kept pace with the trend but Big Mans USA does.
Out of
the shadows, Into the fashion spotlight- Clothes for Big Men.
Although a few specialty merchants cater to
big and tall men in the nation’s largest cities, and a few of them do a brisk
mail-order business, the first retail chain devoted exclusively to big men did
not open in the United States until 1991.
Most men found a few “outsized” items in dim corners of the biggest
retail and discount stores but that was luck.
They generally found very few styles in very few extra large sizes, and
the majority of “haberdashers” could not fit or advise them where to turn to
purchase new wardrobe additions. Major
catalog merchants offered more choices and better goods, but most big-and-tall
men had to settle for “universal” styles and colors—medium lapels on their
jackets, which came only in black, brown, or navy. Even gray was considered somewhat exotic in
big men’s fashions before now. Big men could find a few polo shirts and a
few dress shirts, usually in drab colors, seldom in the highest quality fabrics
but times have changed.
Now, big men are coming into the fashion
spotlight. Leading American clothing designers,
especially Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger, and leading brand names such as
Levis, Dickies, and Lee have developed entire clothing lines exclusively
designed and tailored for big and tall men, who not only are larger than
average but also are proportioned slightly differently from their ordinary
friends and colleagues. Big and tall men
now can find all the current styles, colors, fits and finishes in clothing made
just for them. Even more importantly,
the best lines of big men’s clothing do not charge extra dollars for extra size
and comfort and one online retailer does not even charge for shipping of items.
